Notice periods in the six Gulf countries

CountryStatutory notice
United Arab EmiratesAt least 30 days and no more than 90 days (Art. 43)
Saudi ArabiaEmployer 60 days, employee 30 days (monthly-paid, open-ended contract) (Art. 75)
Qatar1 month up to 2 years’ service, 2 months after (Art. 49)
KuwaitAt least 3 months (monthly-paid, open-ended contract) (Art. 44)
Oman30 days for monthly-paid workers, 15 days for others (Art. 38)
Bahrain30 days, either party (Art. 99)

These are the periods the law sets; your contract may require longer. If you leave without serving notice, your employer may deduct the notice pay from your final settlement.

Before you send it

  1. Check the notice period in your contract and work out your exact last working day.
  2. Know how resigning affects your gratuity, especially in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.
  3. Hand it in writing or by email, and keep proof of the date.
  4. Ask for a written final settlement: last salary, gratuity and unused leave.

Common questions

How do I write a resignation letter for a private-sector job in the Gulf?

State that you are resigning, give your last working day after the notice period, thank your employer and offer to help with the handover. Keep it short and dated, and keep a signed copy or proof you sent it.

How much notice do I have to give when I resign?

It depends on the country and your contract. For example, the UAE requires at least 30 and at most 90 days, and Saudi Arabia 30 days from a monthly-paid employee on an open-ended contract. The table on this page covers all six countries, and your contract may require more.

Does my resignation have to be accepted in Saudi Arabia?

Since the 2025 amendments (Article 79-bis), a resignation is treated as accepted 30 days after you submit it; the employer may defer it by up to 60 days, and you can withdraw it within 7 days.

Do I lose my end-of-service gratuity if I resign?

In Saudi Arabia and Kuwait gratuity is reduced on resignation depending on your years of service; in the UAE, Qatar, Oman and Bahrain it is not reduced once you meet the minimum service. Check the exact figure with your country’s gratuity calculator.

Can I resign through Qiwa in Saudi Arabia?

Many employers handle contract-ending requests through the Qiwa platform. Keep a written, dated resignation letter anyway: it is your proof of the date you resigned and when notice started.
