Salary negotiation in the Gulf
Negotiate housing as its own line item
In the UAE and Qatar especially, employers often anchor on basic salary first. Ask for the housing allowance to be stated separately and increased — it protects your take-home if the company later adjusts grades, and it mirrors how many Emirati and expat packages are structured in offer letters.
Government versus private sector packages
Government and semi-government entities in KSA and the UAE frequently publish clearer grade bands, schooling, and flight benefits. Private sector tech and finance may pay higher variable cash but with fewer soft benefits. Compare total reward, not only the monthly deposit.
Saudization and role scarcity in KSA
Nitaqat categories and Saudization targets can push employers to pay a premium for hard-to-fill technical or bilingual roles, while more common profiles see tighter bands. If your occupation is on a shortage list, use that as leverage — politely and with evidence.
Benchmark your offer against a range, not a single number
Use the junior-to-director spread for your title as context. If your offer sits below the band for your years of experience, ask which grade or job family the role maps to, and what separates the next level.
School fees and annual flights — when to raise them
Bring up education allowance and annual tickets after you have verbal agreement on grade and basic salary, typically with HR or the hiring manager in the final stage. Large employers often have fixed policies; smaller firms sometimes flex one-off signing amounts instead.
